Shazam update for iOS introduces an offline mode

Music recognition app gets a new update in the Store.

A week after Apple and Shazam officially confirmed the rumors about the app acquisition, Shazam rolled out a new update to the iOS app.

The new version of Shazam for iOS comes with the ability to recognize songs even if you are offline. There is a catch, however, as the app basically saves a portion of the song and compare it to the database as soon as you are back online. This update makes sure that you never miss a song, even if you are offline.

According to the release notes for Shazam version 11.6:

Keep Shazaming, even when you’re offline! Next time the music’s on but the WiFi isn’t, simply tap the big blue button and we’ll name that song as soon as you’re back online. Now we’ll notify you immediately, even it you don’t have the Shazam app open.

Don’t forget to keep your Shazams safe and in sync between your devices. Simply create an account and we’ll back up your Shazams so you’ll never lose them.

The state of Shazam is unclear in the future, as Apple acquires Shazam and the service may significantly evolve in the coming months and years. Apple is probably planning to integrate Shazam deeper in iOS, but these plans have not been publicly unveiled just yet.
