Apple Pay reportedly expanding to online merchants

Apple to announce Apple Pay for websites at WWDC 2016

The company is planning to announce Apple Pay touch-to-pay transactions for select online retaliates in a move to expand the popularity of the payment service and challenge PayPal. The move means that online retailers will soon be able to accept payments through Apple Pay, which may endanger the position of PayPal as the only major mobile payment service for websites. Apple will reportedly announce the expansion of its in-house payment service to online merchants at WWDC 2016 next Monday.

This is not the first time we hear rumors about tap to pay transactions for the Web. Back in March, sources familiar with the matter revealed that Apple Pay for websites could debut later in 2016, allowing Touch ID-equipped iPhone and iPad users to pay securely at a number of online US retailers. Apple will likely announce mobile payments for web only via its own browser, while other browsers and older iPhones without Touch-ID won’t support website purchases.

According to the Digital Trends report, Apple Pay for Web will be launching in time for the Holiday shopping season. Apple Pay already supports more than 2 millions physical locations in 6 countries, but the web expansion will definitely help the service conquer new territories.
