New evidence hints at 3D sensing in next iPhone.
Sources close to Apple’s supply chain have revealed that the next high-end iPhone, the rumored iPhone 8 or iPhone X, is likely to offer some advanced 3D sensing technology that would allow users run AR apps on their phones.
The report is based on the camera component supplier – Largan Precision. They have confirmed that Apple ordered lenses with 3D sensing modules, possibly for the late 2017 model – the top-end iPhone 8. The phone would be using VCSEL lasers to unleash augmented reality (AR) experiences with new type of AR apps. Apple may be unveiling new toolkits to help developers build AR apps for the new devices.
VCSEL shipments will begin shortly after June, according to LoupVentures. Apple may be the first company using VCSEL lasers, possibly in both the front and the rear facing cameras, allowing users to take advantage of 3D sensing AR.
Meanwhile, we learn the sad news that iPhone 8 may cost up to $1000 when it launches later in 2017. Due to the usage of many advanced modules it probably has, the smartphone may be close to the Galaxy Note 7 in terms of price, which translates into $950 – $1000.
However, not all new models will be priced that much – Apple is also believed to be launching two other, more regular handsets – improved versions of the iPhone 7 and 7+.
